What is the difference between CDMA and GSM?
First of all, neither GSM nor CDMA is technically better. Each technology provides the same service. The quality of a network depends on the carrier, not the cellular standard used.

Most cell phone owners around the world only have to worry about a single carrier technology called the Global System for Mobile Communications, or GSM for short. As its name implies, this standard was developed for, and has been adopted by, almost the entire globe as the way to communicate via cellular calls. In the US, they standard was adopted by AT&T and T-Mobile. You will need a SIM to operate devices on this network

An alternative cellular standard known as Code Division Multiple Access, or CDMA, is used by many carriers around the world. It is most popular in the United States and Russia, but it's also used in some Asian and African countries, often alongside competing GSM carriers. The US carriers are Verizon and Sprint.

Do I need a SIM to operate on a CDMA network?
The answer is it depends upon the technology implemented in your device. For the majority of CDMA devices in deployment using the CDMA 1xRTT or EVDO technology, a SIM is not necessary. The devices are activated over the air using firmware stored in the device.

With CDMA devices using LTE, a SIM is need to provide the service for the devices. Also, the device needs to have Diversity Antenna coverage.

What happen if I use an EV-DO device and I am out of EV-DO coverage?
If you have access to the CDMA network, your device will automatically "fall back" to support the lower 1xRTT data service, albeit at lower speed. Your use and billing for service is unaffected.

How do I obtain support from IOT SmartData Labs after I start using your services?
IOT SmartData's support team can be accessed by email, phone, fax or by creating trouble tickets directly into our Web Portal. IOT SmartData also provides a 24/7 after hours messaging service making our technical representatives available in the event of an emergency situation.

How much does it cost?
The IOT SmartLabs Lab Program is priced at $500 for 10 hours of engineering service. The airtime cost are priced differently than the Commercial deployment plans due to the low volume of devices, system setup and technical support requirements. The service plan comes in durations of 90 days and can be extended simply by submitting payments and activating via our web site. The plan offers you activation of your device, 90 days of airtime access and/or up to 5MB of data usage. For information on pricing call 858-350-5855 or email us at developmentlab@m2mdatasmart.
